Kerala to ban booze?

By Unknown September 6, 2014
With over 8 litres of alcohol consumption per person annually, Kerala is the highest alcohol consuming state in India. Government in Kerala has decided to combat the booze problem by banning alcohol. On Sunday Sept 12th, over 700 bars will be shut down and Sundays have been declared dry days. Morally, it might be the right move but economically, it could make a big dent in Kerala's economy as Shashi Tharoor points out.(http://www.ndtv.com/article/opinion/the-risks-of-an-alcohol-ban-for-god-s-own-country-by-shashi-tharoor-584876) Excise duties collected on liquor will not be available thus affecting revenues, bar workers will be out of job and Tourism, which is a huge Industry in Kerala will suffer. Dealing with the drinking problem without hitting the economy will be a big challenge for the Kerala government.
